We're back with mentor highlights! A blog series that showcases AYP's mentors, running through some Q's and learning about their drives that led them to mentoring Aberdeen's up and coming talent.
This time we have John Wilson!

How long have you been part of the AYP Mentor Scheme?
"Roughly 5 years?"
Why did you choose to become a Mentor through AYP?
"Having retired, I wanted to give something back to those who have the ambition to promote themselves.
"I never had a formal external mentor in my career so, this scheme allows those who need this to get independent advice, not associated with their work place, to receive it."
What area of development have you and your mentee
been working on/towards?
"All of my mentees have benefitted from discussion/direction on
career path/progression within their business. This has been
possible due to lack of conflicts of interest with their line
managers, who can sometimes have tunnel vision
on expectations.
"I have also been able to provide introductions to other
companies through a wider network than
the mentee may have had."
How do you feel you have benefited from being a mentor on the scheme?
"I like to see people do well and achieve progression that I
wasn’t able to get at an earlier stage in my own career."
What advice would you give to people looking to become a mentor and support the development of another person?
"Its an opportunity
to keep your mind active
to help others
to maintain and expand your own network
gain experience from the mentees who have problems that the mentor may never have encountered
exposure to different aspects of business, so continuous learning!"
Thanks again John for sharing your journey in becoming a mentor with AYP. We're looking forward to sharing more journeys so keep a look out for our next post!
